To most of the mums-to-be, antenatal check-ups are a new world all on their own. Imagine medical jargon, tests, long queues, and all sorts of advice. However, antenatal visits are about deeply knowing your bodyand what is good for both of you.

Here is a dose of reality before your next appointment. We discuss a few things that no one ever says to you about your antenatal check-ups.

It is normal to be nervous (even every time)

Even repeat moms acknowledge that they experience butterflies before an appointment. Will everything be okay? Is the baby growing well? Did I eat right? These are all valid worries.

Obstetricianssay it is quite natural: Pregnancy makes one feel very responsible. Being anxious shows that you are very concerned about the well-being of your baby.

Before your antenatal checkup, write what you want to know. It makes you feel more in control. Also, you will not forget about essential stuff.

Some visits get monotonous

Not all appointments will be exciting. There are days when it only requires checking your blood pressure, checking your belly, or checking test results. It may sound redundant. But these basic examinationsenable physicians to identify problems early. For instance, high blood pressure or gestational diabetes can happenduring pregnancy.

Consistency is everything. Although such a visit may not appear difficult, it is better to do it. Every check-up is one more step to a healthy birth.

You will be undergoing so many tests

Blood tests, urine samples, and ultrasounds… You will be used to saying ‘’notagain’’ every other time? Pregnancy tests are a common procedure. They monitor your iron levels down to the growth of your baby.

It is not a problem to ask about the purpose of each test. Knowing why will make you less anxious and establish trust with your doctor.

It is not always picture-perfect

Some mums hope that each ultrasound will be another magical movie scene. But at times, the baby is not facing the camera, or the doctor is busy doing measurements and not chatting with the mum. And that’s okay.

Pregnancies are all different. There will be emotional and exciting visits and technical or even a bit boring visits. They are both in a normal, healthy procession.

You can and shouldspeak up

Prenatal care is a two-way communication. When something does not work: a symptom, a drug, or even a concern, raise the topic. It is not that your gynaecologist is there to check on your baby, but to help you as well.

Invite your partner (where possible). The presence of people to listen, write notes, or ask questions can make every visit more comfortable.

Final thoughts

Antenatal visits are a milestone in your motherhood. Since nobody ever tells you this: with every beat of your heart, every exam you take, and every question you ask, you are committing an act of love. You and your baby will be thankful much later.
